Why Support is Needed

The mission of Leadership Winston-Salem--educating, connecting and energizing leaders to serve and improve the community--guides everything we do, from class selection process to curriculum design to alumni engagement. This program is all about building strong, lasting relationships with other leaders, learning more about our community than you ever thought you could, and being inspired to make a difference in our community.

Approximately sixty percent (52%) of the budget is covered by tuition fees. The remaining 48% must be obtained through fundraising efforts which are a critical component to ensure Leadership Winston-Salem’s success and sustainability. Our partners for funding are local corporations, foundations, alumni and individuals.

The organization, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable entity, has 3 part-time staff and is governed by a Board of Directors representing a group of diverse community leaders, most of whom are alumni of the program. Alumni continue to make a significant impact in our community through their leadership and involvement with civic organizations, local government, education, art organizations and more.

The planning process to recruit each class is an in-depth, year round endeavor, to ensure diversity of the class. Tuition expenses are typically covered by the participants’ place of employment. A special scholarship fund has been established in memory of one of the founders, Dr. Thomas K. Hearn, Jr., to ensure that all who want to participate in the program are not deterred due to tuition costs. Learn more.
